Does this sound familiar? You watch films in the original and follow 90% of the dialogue, you read books โ€” and then you have to order a coffee or ask a stranger for directions, and your tongue sticks to the roof of your mouth. Teachers have a name for it: you understand everything and can say nothing. The Canadian linguist Merrill Swain showed exactly why this happens, and what fixes it.

The Canadian immersion experiment: the end of input-only theory

Through the 1970s and 80s linguistics was dominated by Stephen Krashen's theory that acquiring a language needs nothing but comprehensible input โ€” listen and read enough, and the rest follows.

Merrill Swain studied the graduates of French immersion schools in Ontario. English-speaking children had spent seven years studying entirely in French: listening to teachers, reading textbooks, watching programmes. Their listening comprehension was excellent. But the moment they had to speak for themselves, their French stayed grammatically helpless and full of basic errors.

Swain's conclusion shook the field: even thousands of hours of passive listening do not make a fluent speaker. To learn to speak, you have to produce output.

What happens in your head when you try to build a phrase in a new language?

  • 1. Noticing the gap: only once you start speaking do you discover what you actually don't know โ€” which preposition, which verb ending. While you were listening, the brain skipped those details, because the meaning came through without them.
  • 2. Hypothesis testing: saying a phrase is a test โ€” "will I be understood if I put it like this?" The response lets the brain recalibrate its grammar model on the spot.
  • 3. Automaticity and metalinguistic reflection: assembling your own sentences again and again moves the rules out of conscious recall and into a fluent motor skill.

Why multiple-choice exercises make it worse

When an app offers "build the sentence from these blocks" or "pick A, B or C", you stay in recognition mode. Every grammatical form has already been assembled for you; all you do is choose the right brick. A real conversation hands you no bricks โ€” the line has to be built from nothing.

How the output hypothesis shapes Lexy
